  • How much does it cost to get the house designed according to Vaastushastra?

Totally depends on ';aap kiske chakkar mein phase ho';.

On a serious note the expert can find out many remdies or few remedial measures in your house and the expenses depend on that. How much does it cost to get the house designed according to Vaastushastra?
There is another school of vastu thought that views d茅cor changes as merely cosmetic. If changes must be made, start from scratch 鈥?from choosing a suitable land for your home, to constructing it according to vastu principles.

The Maharishi Global Construction (MGC) does just that. Inspired by one-time Beatles' guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi 鈥?who is said to have introduced transcendental meditation to the world 鈥?the firm offers vastu-based design plans and consultation on issues ranging from the ideal topography of the land for your home, to the colour of your walls.

Founder Doug Greenfield is a private developer and a partner in an oil company in the U.S. Midwest. He was ';completely shocked'' by the effect of moving his oil company to a Fairfield, Iowa building built on Vedic principles. The company became more coherent, employee-broker disputes were resolved and sales went up 20 per cent every year except one, when it was impacted by the 9/11 crisis.

    Greenfield holds the volunteer position of president of MGC. Building a house the Vedic way, using environment-friendly materials, can cost up to 10 per cent more than usual homes. But there is interest, he says, among ';forward-thinking people that want to protect the earth and the environment and society.';

The company has built homes in the U.S. and Canada for blood and cancer centres, offices, condos and ';hundreds of residential homes.''

One of these homes is in Sarnia, Ont. owned by Shannon and David Bourke, who teach transcendental meditation.

';The colours on our walls are cream and gold, pastel pinks and peach ... with no dramatic contrast especially in the bedrooms,'; says Shannon Bourke. ';There is no black, no grey. We have to use very clear colours and keep the home light and airy.

';There is so much light in the house, we notice the changes in the sun and moon every night. We feel very connected to nature,'; she says.

They use all-natural materials 鈥?silk curtains in the meditation room and bedroom, granite kitchen countertop, marble fireplace and wood floors. The home faces Lake Huron to the north, the best location for water in vastu.

The cost of building their house 11 years ago was in the $400,000 to $500,000 range.

How to make money selling house designs?

I draw house designs on graph paper to scale for fun. Most of the designs are between 1100 and 1800 square feet, reduce wasted spaces, have lots of closets, and are family friendly. How to I get into the business of selling these ideas? They are originals, I've looked over literally thousands of plans and have not seen anything like the ones I've made. I do not have CAD experience, and can't afford to go to college for it at the moment (I don't want any more debt). Anyone out there with advice? How to make money selling house designs?
There's a reason why Architects are certified. They have a lot of liability on their hands when it comes to what they draw and design.

There is no reason why you can't design what you want to design, but the problem will come when an engineer or a builder demands for a stamp on your drawings.

You're potentially liable for anything that goes wrong as a result of your drawings. This is a huge responsibility that could ruin you financially if you're not protected. If you have great designs, you might be able to partner with an engineer who can certify it and stamp it, but most engineers do not belong to an recognized accredited association.

My best advice to you is to take your talents to architect school. Get your education, do your several years with a firm and then get your certification/accreditation. If you can't afford to go to school, you'll have to wait. I really doubt you'll find many people who are willing to take the risk.

Unfortunately the answer to your question is to go to school and get your credentials through a firm. You might want to start off simpler. Many people take up interior design and building technology to start out. These don't require credentials and it's good way to still design and draw and do space planning. You'll still need to go to school so you can get a clear understanding of codes and standards. Most colleges offer 1-2 year courses. How to make money selling house designs?
You may have to do what a lot of poor talented people do.

Get a good civil service job and go to night school.

No one will trust a person to design their home without some decent credentials

    Good luck

    Online house designing?

is there any websites that let you design your own home for free.. i dont want to pay anything im just interested in designing my own homeOnline house designing?
There is software you can buy that lets you play architect and design a house. But you'll pay for it, and rightly so.

A house is the most expensive purchase that most of us will ever make. If you're going to design your own, and you're going to live in it for the next 10-40 years, why not spend a few dollars to get something that will do a good job of it, rather than a slap-dash job? Otherwise, you might as well just doodle on some scratch paper.

Besides, if you're serious about designing your own place, you'll need to have a professional-looking set of plans - or several, actually - to give to zoning boards, builders, contractors, and so on. They won't take something that you scratched out on the kitchen table the other day between supper and American Idol. You'll pay plenty for that. You might save yourself some time and money by using the architectural software to do a lot of the planning and head-scratching ahead of time.

I am not sure if sites I listed below will help you. The software you are seeking you most likely will have to buy.

BUT, you can go to any building supplier and they have the software for customers to sit down with one of their consultants and work this out with you, and generally it is free of charge.

  • Computer Software: (Architect) House Designing Vs Graphic Designing - For Pros Only?

Can someone tell me more about Architect and Graphic designing. Im about to choose my Course but i dont know which one T_TComputer Software: (Architect) House Designing Vs Graphic Designing - For Pros Only?
To do graphic design you can take several different courses at a variety of colleges. You must have an artistic flair or you will struggle. Once you've completed the course, you then have to prove yourself by creating a portfolio of you work which you must present to prospective employers. They look for artistic talent, the ability to project a concept on paper and many other skills. The courses try to teach you these but they won't teach you how to draw. They will expect this of you before you even start.

Architects gain their skills via a University degree. It takes in many disciplines including maths, engineering, architectural science and the list goes on. Once again you must have a flair, but this time for architectural space, beauty and harmony. You still need to be able to draw, but more as a draftsman. So technical drawing skills will really help. Many budding architects work for a company as a architectural draftsman and work their way up from there. Although architectual and graphic design are like chalk and cheese, both offer fantastic career paths to the right person.

If you had the money to get a custom-made house designed EXACTLY your way how would you have it designed?

I'd like a 2-story house with an indoor jacuzzi %26amp; swimming pool. I know I see celebrities with elevators %26amp; vending machines %26amp; their houses %26amp; stuff. I wouldn't want a vending machine in my house, but I would LOVE an elevator. If I was rich enough, I'd have an indoor wave pool in my house. 5 bedroom %26amp; 3 bathrooms plus a weight room %26amp; an entertainment room.If you had the money to get a custom-made house designed EXACTLY your way how would you have it designed?
2 story 7 bedroom 4 bath a game room swimming pool outside wrap around porch with two jacuzzi(one just for kids and the other for adults). I would like to have more bedrooms than are needed we are always having people drop in unexpectedly and it sucks having that fight with them no you are taking the bed and I am taking the couch. I don't need an elevator or entertainment room because any room we are in is an entertainment room. LOL. I would like it outside city limits with horse stables in the back. I would like the master bedroom to face west and have this huge picture window so that I can watch sunsets from the comfort of my bed.If you had the money to get a custom-made house designed EXACTLY your way how would you have it designed?
I love the urban/unfinished look of old factories. A 3,000 SQF urban loft with few or no walls... Two floors. Large old factory windows... wood beams with ceilings over 20 feet high... The bathroom must be very big and no separation for the shower with plants everywhere around... I can go on and on and on and on...
Goodness! What would anyone need with 6 bedrooms and indoor jacuzzis and pools? And a staff? I'd be happy to have a two- or three-bedroom ranch place where my dogs and I could live. Some of you people ought to come live with us homeless and see how your standards fall to practicality. Keep your weight room and personal trainer and give me the security of a locked door at night.
i would love to have a house built into a mountain side, and would want it cabin looking inside. i would want all the rooms to be cozy feeling, not overly huge, all old looking wood floors, beds made by hand, and want them to look natural.and would like to have a pond for swimming, and a natural hot spring for jacuzzi
I would have a two story home with a basement made from poly steel so that it is tornado resistant since I live in ';Tornado Alley';. I would have 5 bedrooms and 5 1/2 baths plus a garage apartment for my mom to stay in. Indoor/ outdoor pool with a beach entry and hot tub would be a must. And I want a table and a bar in my hot tub like they have a Schlitterbahn.
I am not sure exactly how it would be designed, but it would have four bedrooms and an indoor pool. I wouldn't need or want anything overly big but I would want plenty of bathrooms. My only problem would be WHERE I would want the house built.
Any house with a full on maid service would be just fine with me.
I would have a single level home that was rather ordinary and as energy efficient as possible. I would like a great view and lots of windows but something smaller, intimate, easy to clean, low maintenence, and environmentally friendly.
6 bedrooms, 4 baths, entertainment room, library, office, family room/game room, living room, dining room, huge kitchen, sunroom, jacuzzi in the indoor pool area and exercise room, heated outdoor pool with cabana,, on 3 levels, with an elevator for when I am too old to climb the stairs. And a staff to maintain the grounds and house, and a personal trainer to whip my butt into shape!
The front yard would be guarded by geese who had their own keeper to clean up their poop. The foyer would open into a big marble and glass sitting area. There would be a swimming pool on the bottom floor with a cellar and drystores room %26amp; squash courts. The main floor would consist of HUGE state of the art kitchen, dinning, living family room, rumpus room, den and garage. The second floor would consist of 4 bedrooms all with WIR %26amp; ensites, Media room, Gym %26amp; Spa%26amp; Sauna. The top floor would be parents retreat %26amp; bedroom (complete with stripper pole %26amp; sex swing), huge spa bath, WIR %26amp; Huge balcony.

There would be a tennis court %26amp; outdoor pool with waterslide.

    generalities... ask a question!

Why are so many houses designed so ugly and boring?

Most houses have a complete lack of color and shape. Why are so many houses designed so ugly and boring?
Most builders only have three to four models which they build according to specifications. You can change the orientation, or the facade but they are still the same house. Since the houses are ';mass-produced'; they are considered by many to be ugly. Drive through a neighborhood and observe the homes, each 3rd or 4th will be the same design.

The rationale that is most often given is one of easy design and assemble. If my employees know the routine they will complete it faster each and every time it is repeated.

Hope this helps ...Why are so many houses designed so ugly and boring?
Because most buildings are designed by men and they don't seem to have a woman or women's thoughts in mind.

Their only concerns are dimensions and lot sizes, etc, etc.
Not everyone can afford to have a beautifully designed house. We just have to live with it.

Housing design for raising yorkies for profit?

I previously asked a question about dog kennelling, and received a lot of sanctimonious, preaching, self righteous remarks. I AM GOING TO RAISE DOGS FOR PROFIT!!! WITH OR WITHOUT YOUR APPROVAL!!! But I want to do it right. My question is this: Why must they be in small ';cages'; or ';runs';. Is it a bad idea to periodically let the females be together, say in a communal area, for several hours per day, as we would our family pet(s). And also, is there a more humane design for the kennels? Thank you.Housing design for raising yorkies for profit?
First, I am going to give you a 'sanctimonious, preaching, self righteous remark' Then I'll help you...

Raising dogs for profit is a bad idea, it increases the suffering of other animals and is unethical in the eyes of anyone who truly loves dogs. You should show your animals and have an extraordinary level of breed knowledge before you breed your animals... you must be prepared to say 'no' to a prospective buyer if they aren't a good match for the breed or particular puppy... if you are breeding only for profit you will not be able to adequately screen or educate potential buyers.

Now, I'll give you some information. Since you're going to do it I might as well help ensure the best quality of life for the animals, right? They do NOT need, nor should they be in small cages or runs, this is for commercial kennels who deny their animals exercise, vet care, love, attention, and general welfare. You should treat all of the parents as family pets... they need the love, attention, and training so that they can properly raise the puppies and ensure that they become easily socialized with other dogs and with people. Keeping them in a communal area is BEST as dogs in the wild form packs and do better in a social setting. Not for just a few hours; if anything I would keep them in a communal area most of the time, and perhaps crate/cage them only at night (or just let them sleep together.) The most humane design for the kennels (other than keeping them all as you would a completely 'pet' dog) is to have 3 or 4 sections for separation if needed as well as one large communal area for them. The kennel can have something similar to a doggie door and allow them access to an outside fenced in area at their will. The purpose of having a few sections for separation is to keep males away from females and to isolate a sick, pregnant, or nursing dog.

Let me reiterate that for you, the more social and communal the kennel is the better the dogs will be... happier, healthier, easier to care for, etc.

I am a dog lover and a vet student.... I know you will see paragraph 2 as self-righteous but I feel it needed to be said if I am going to help you in any way.Housing design for raising yorkies for profit?
I prefer to keep my dogs in my home as part of the family. I too breed them, but i don't keep them locked up in kennels (of course I only have 3 too......hehehe) The breeder we got our female from had about 10 - 15 Shih tzus running around inside his house, they were all part of the family.

Just remember though, breeding is not a way to make lots of money; by the time you pay for all the necessary vet visits, the extra food the mom eats, the shots and stuff for the pups after they're born, you're lucky if you break even. Also remember Yorkies can have difficult deliveries which means sometimes you may have to rush out to an emergency vet in the middle of the night (when most pups are born) and she may even need an emergency C section or else you risk losing mom and pups.

So before you decide to become a breeder, please talk to a local breeder in your area and do your homework.

    Good luck.
Yes, it's a good idea to let them socialize like that. However, it is very hard, almost impossible to make a profit raising animals, dogs or otherwise, unless you have a huge business. Small scale isn't worth it because you will be lucky to break even.
I don't see why you can't let the females run together. I would just becareful with the males.

I have seen males and females get hooked through a fence before so becareful of that.

If properly done I don't see how you are going to make a profit.

Good luck to you. I wish there were more breeders who thought about the dog and not just what that dog can do for his/her bank account. Again Good luck to you.
first thing you need to do is make sure the breeding pair are of breed standard, good health records, and have been AKC registered. You also need to go to the AKC website and check on breeding practices for these dogs, and contact other breeders for advice and tips. DONT breed every time your female goes into heat, give her some time to recover.
I am not saying this to be self-righteous or anything else, but I want to be honest with you about this at the same time. I have a friend who bred dogs for years. She made little money at it. The thing is that it costs a lot to take a ***** through pregnancy and then feed the pups, give them first shots and all of that. More than you can imagine I bet. So don't be thinking you will make much extra. Maybe $400 dollars every few months or so in exchange for a lot of work and some heartache when things go wrong, which they will from time to time. Now if you still want to do this, I suggest keeping only females and going to someone for stud service. It keeps your resources free to care for the females, and you will not want to keep breeding to the same stud anyway, as you will probably keep a female puppy here and there, and you can't inbreed them. You can keep several together for periods of time, too. You just have to watch that they don't fight. That is another problem my friend had. Her bitches fought constantly. Then she sold a pup to a good friend who abused it. She finally got tired of the hastle and heartache, and has not bred in a long time.
Man, these people are really gonna blast you now! You have opened a can of ********. Ahhhh. if you have to ask these questions, you are not ready yet for one dog or a whole slew of them. You know Yorkies have alot of health problems? I have one, totally adore him, but am aware of the time, money and hardship he faces. He is 6 years old and will be a ';Senior dog'; next year. Betcha don't even know much about Yorkies xcept that they go for a lotta $$$$$.
GOOD FOR YOU! SO MANY BREEDERS CAN BE SOOOOOOOOOO FULL OF THEMSELVES. ASK A VET ABOUT THE KENNEL STUFF. RAISE YOUR DOGS THE WAY YOU WANT. I PREFER FAMILY RAISED DOGS. BY THE WAY DO ALL THOSE SELF IMPORTANT BREEDERS UNDERSTAND THAT THEY ARE WILLING TO TAKE A LARGE SUM OF MONEY FOR THERE DOGS? I THINK THEY FORGET THAT THEY MAKE A LOT OF MONEY ON THERE PUPS!
I respectfully disagree. If you are doing it ';right'; you will not be making a profit. I spend far more on my dogs than I get back from puppy sales.
Yorkies are TERRIERS. IF two of your dogs take a dislike for each other one can't just move on like wolves handle this, so they FIGHT. Maybe to the DEATH and the entire pack can become excited to the extent of joining in. Better be there at all times and bettter know how to break up a fight if you do this.

Better know how to clip or groom yorkies too -that hair matts.

done right there is little profit so forgive us for assuming your gonna end up bein the next puppymill rescue tale....

The ';Queenslander'; design is over a hundred years old, with high roof and high internal ceiling and a wide covered veranda all the way around it is designed to stay a cool as possible.

The design was also usually built on poles for flooding, this might also be a good feature for the future. How much does the housing designs in Australia contribute to Australia's overall carbon emissions?
    It depends on the design!

But there are new building standards being developed all the time that promote the use of energy efficient design so hopefully there will be a steady reduction in the carbon footprint of new houses.

Mind you, the concept of energy efficient housing has been around for years, but this was always viewed as 'alternative' design rather than mainstream.

    3D housing design program?

Does anyone know a software program that allows you to create floor prints of houses, and design it with furniture, floor, etc. but also with scenery, and you can look at it 3D...It was a really good program, and we used it in school, but I can't remember what it's called. I'm pretty sure it's probably expensive, but money is not an object...so please! Does anyone remember, we used it in school during housing and interior/exterior decorating?! I am redoing my parents yard, it's trecherous, and I want to show them a 3D plan of how it's going to look for their approval. Please and thankyou.3D housing design program?

There are several good free websites that provide you with design plans. Before you start designing your home, you might to check out floorplans.com, homeplans.com and free-floor-plans.com. Even if you don't use their services, you can get the ';feel'; for the type of house you'd like to build. Also google, yahoo or use ask.com to get more information on free floor plans.

I hate the game, but making the houses and such is fun (like being an architect, but less complicated)Anyone else here, only play Sims for the House designing?
yes but I also like designing the people after that I kill them *maniacle laughterAnyone else here, only play Sims for the House designing?
They make other games that just let you design houses and there are a lot more tools and stuff to make your house look better than a Sims house.

And I enjoy playing and designing but sometimes when Im designing I forget about the family and focus on the house too much haha.
I build the house, save it, and walk away only to come back and build another house. Designing houses is the only part I like about the Sims game. That and creating the family and making them look hilarious. Hah, we have no lives. That's okay, we have houses to design. xD
Yeah I like making big neighborhood with all of my customized houses, I dont really play with people, I just give them big houses.
It's definitely one of the most enjoyable features, I do enjoy the game play too but I LOVE the home designing.

i was wondering were i could download a free house designing software for windows vista. Were can i download a free house designing software?
I went thru this about 2 months ago. You can go to CNET.com and look for TRIAL downloads. It gives you 30 days. Start with Basic and NOT the top of line, unless you are already good at CAD software (computer assisted design).

As I live in Brazil, and prices are adjusted locally, I went over to a major book store in the shopping, and got a nice one for about 30 dollars. It did a good job, but I ended up buying a 3 year home here in Brazil, in the rural area and did not have to use it. But get a trial version when you are ready to start, so you do not waste a day. For 30 to 80 dollars there are some good software on the market. Want professional and you are a specialist, be ready to pay out 800 dollars.

But start basic first, as for sure you are in no hurry, probably.

If you go to Builder.com, you will find hundreds of elevations and basic floor plans that you can view and download and print for free. As to free plans, I don't think you will will find very many. Just printing or copying as set of plans is about $50 and I don't think there are many willing to make that big a gift. A set of plans with which you can build a house is about $500 or more for the several copies you need to build.

What education do i need to be successful in interior/exterior house design?

im just about to graduate high school, and ive been interested in designing homes since i can remember. Im looking to do the same thing Sarah Richardson does, she designs lottery homes, and she has a show on HGTV about building her house, which i want to do someday, build one from scratch. I honestly dont know whats involved to get there, in terms of what to do to get my foot in the door, and education. My family has money for education and ill most likely be going on scholarship for softball, and high marks. Do you know what school/program i have to get in for this, how long it takes, cost, and any other information. Also, do you know how well this industry does in Vancouver, BC?

any information would be great! Thanks! What education do i need to be successful in interior/exterior house design?
Well multiple schools offer interior design programs. I too like you wanted to get into the field. But when I spoke to people who have graduated they told me that to actually be hired as an interior designer you have to have YEARS of experience.

My teacher told me that graduates are expected to work at places like home depot (don't know if you have them there) Its the ones with 15+ years of experience that get the high paying jobs.

Cost depends on the school that you go to. Some community colleges do offer low cost interior design school, but then again you can go to some universities for this. As far as the industry does around your area I'm not sure.

But the best of luck to you! I hope you break the norm! What education do i need to be successful in interior/exterior house design?
    Check out art schools
I know you can take Interior Design and probably at UBC, i might be going there in 2 years :) You would get a masters because its university. If you want to design houses, you need to take Residential Architecture.

from my own experiance NEVER use a flat roof -- they were Really popular here in the desert about 40-50 years ago and for the last 10 or so years the very bad results have been having to be rebuilt --

i am not talking the usual re-roof thing i am talking damages so bad that sometimes the only thing to do is tear down the house. most of the problems stem from hidden leaks in the walls that rot the house and cause hidden mold issues.

besides more space is NEVER a bad idea now is it! :)

the loft may not be used now.... but may be later. more added house value in the long run

What do you think of this house design?

There's this style in the Mediterranean places. And I don't see how come there's no homes like this in, say, Toronto. Well, absence of money and architectural taste could be the reason.

Ok, say we have a lot without a house. The perimeter of the lot will be the outside wall of the house. Then 5 yards from the outer wall we build and inner wall.

The remaining space inside is a garden. Wall on the inside can have big windows that can slide open. Outside windows are typically very small for privacy and heat reflection.

    Kind of like this

    http://www.marco-dan.com/P1010002.JPG

Building material is brick. What do you think of this house design?
I ';think'; in 2009 you would be lucky to find anywhere in the world that would let you build what's in that picture because of modern standards on a new build.

The earthquake in Italy a few month ago had many buildings like that destroyed and I'm guessing will be rebuilt as in the picture for heritage reasons.

But I can't see anyone in Italy being able to build new like that again IMO.What do you think of this house design?
I like those kind of houses, but you'll have to fight hard for zoning easements and changes in regulations to permit you to build on the property line- there are a variety of required set-backs from the property lines.

I would also not use bricks, which requires a lot of energy to produce, but instead choose CEBs, compressed earth blocks.

These are basically adobe earth blocks produced by powerful hydraulic presses, and the earth can often be taken directly from the build site, another energy savings. Adding some fly ash can great strengthens the blocks- it acts as a cement- and helps dispose of the ash from various industrial processes, like coal fired electric plants.

Regardless of whatever you build with, you need a minimum of R-20 insulation in the walls and at least R-40 in the roof, but I'd double those figures- insulation saves, while energy costs are rising and will rise more.

Have a look at using Stabilized Insulated Rammed Earth walls, or S.I.R.E. walls: this is a new method of building rammed earth walls with a core of rigid insulation. See the link for this.

And, of course, the same effect can be produced by designing and building a straw bale house- the bales are just large bricks, covered with a lime or cement render or plaster.

The R- value of these walls will be between R-40 and R-45, depending on how dense the straw ( or hemp stalks, which are available in Ontario) are compressed, but can run upwards to R-68 if you choose to build with 36'; wide ';Jumbo'; bales.

For more info about SB construction in Ontario, see the Ontario Straw Bale Builders' Coalition pages (OSBBC link.)

    http://www.osbbc.ca/

There are quite a few straw bale houses in Ontario, and at least one of the growing number in Quebec is in downtown Montreal.

While at the OSBBC site, check out the video to see what happens to a straw bale house during a serious earthquake (hint: not much.)

Back to your question: I like this kind of neighbourhood, and you will find them in the old parts of Quebec City and Montreal. These are true Canadian heritage styles, which can be updated to net-zero energy capabilities.

    Cheers,

    StrawCat.

I'd probably make the house 4 floors keeping the kitchen and living area simple.

I don't know how much room you have in between the arch way and the bathroom, but what about a partition between the two? (http://www.target.com/4-Panel-Room-Divid鈥?/a> -to give you an idea what I mean)

Or you could also build a small permanent wall to act as the partition.

Also, you could put up a curtain that parts in the middle over the archway.

Hope those helped!Your suggestions on my house design?
Since it's a cinema room I would put up a black curtain in front of the bathroom door. If you can, hang the curtain so that you actually go all the way through the curtain before you get to the door so that nobody ever sees the bathroom door.
I agree with the above answer but I wouldn't use black. I would use a colour that is similar and harmonises with the colour on the walls, that way it will not look as ugly!

Hi again Architecture friends, do you think my house design is unique?

My wife designs homes. We are located in North Central Florida.

It is very good work. The only problem I see is the depth of the house ( based on the right side of the picture ) is way to shallow.

Personally I think you have a very good talent, but you need training to bring it further out. It could become a good business if you get the education. I suggest drafting, and maybe art school. There is a Windows program called Softplan that we use. It is a very good program for renderings of homes. It is quite expensive though, and requires a special ';key'; that plugs into your USB port.

If you email me I can see if I can send you a better idea of what a Rendering should look like.

  • Earthship house design question...?

I am interested in building an earthship style house with 10' high walls. Does anyone know how thick the reinforced concrete walls would have to be to support the weight of the berm up against it (want to do 10' berm on 3 sides of house)? I am looking for a general idea to decide if this is even feasible before paying a structural engineer to get the details of the project. Also, what if I want to support a second story made out of wood without a berm above it? Thanks.Earthship house design question...?
an earthship usually uses reclaimed items for wall like car tyres filled with rammed earth and covered in lime render.

concrete is not a good component in such a structure as it doesn't flex and move, and it has high environmental impact too.

Consider building a timber frame and then the walls are not load bearing. see Walter Segal Method, or Ben Law Woodland houseEarthship house design question...?
sorry i cant give you any technical information but do you realize concrete is one of the worst co2 emitters out there, when you take in to account the manufacture process

  • Question for architects and home designers. What's going on with new houses design, they are making these

ridiculos home plans where you enter a house and the first thing you see is a wall, the houses are divided in squares with interior walls evrywhere making houses small and cramped, what about columns? I saw one where the small dining area had 4 columns you couldn't walk into the house w/o hitting one, what about those rear entry garage? instead of having a nice backyard now you have a garage and a alley for cars where only one car can drive at a time. So when you get home you still have to drive to the end of the block turn around on the alleyway if there is another car leaving his house one of you has to back up, once you reach home you enter you house trough the back, ceilings: you see this houses with beautiful tall roofs on the outside as you enter, the interior ceilings are flat and low. Isn't cheaper and better to leave the vaulted ceiling inside, leave walls and columns off, have a front garage?Question for architects and home designers. What's going on with new houses design, they are making these
I am neither an architect or designer, but I am a contractor who works exclusivly with both...and for better or worse (worse in my opinion)..there is a growing trend in new home design to mimic the style of homes from times past. They are designing narrow homes so more can be built on their parcel of land,so the insides become more chopped up, the rear entry garage allows them to build narrow since a garage will be in the rear not on the side, vaulted ceilings are more expensive due to all the additional drywall work involved. You may also have noticed that they are also putting in sidewalks again...there is this same trend that people want a more neighborhood community feel, with homes closer together and sidewalks connecting everything.I am as neighborly as the next guy but I'll keep my 3.5 wooded acres...I like neighbors,I just do not want to see and hear them all the time.Question for architects and home designers. What's going on with new houses design, they are making these
    Incoming book:

First off, a majority of the houses that are now being constructed in this country no longer designed or sealed by a licensed architect. Provided a developer is willing to accept the liability, they can proceed through the permitting and construction process without even consulting one. Typically major developers will have a designer, or even more rarely a pocket architect, to pound out a few plans and elevations and then mass produce the designs, regardless of their quality. This problem is multiplied that so many houses are now spec-homes. The owner / client involved in the design process is most often the developer. The people who will live in the home aren't involved in the design process until they have to decide what paint color they want, and if they want a laundry closer or half-bath under the staircase. There is no accountability for design anymore.

Cheapest materials used the easiest and quickest construction method are the rule of the day. Quality has been replaced by quantity for the better part 30 years, and all that is marketed for a house is the number of square feet, the number of cars the garage can hold, the number of bedrooms / bathrooms, and the faux style that the outside may look like. Houses that are honestly designed (rather than congealed from market conventions) tend to be smaller, more complex, and yes, more expensive. Even a person with no knowledge about architecture can walk into a designed (doesn't even have to be well designed) house, and immediately tell the difference.

As the poster above me pointed out and possibly might illustrate, the trend of hostility between architects and contractors reaches a new high each day. We should be working as a team on a project, not competitors after every bit of scrap we can pull from the budget. Architects are trained designers, and specialize in the overall concept, how the spaces ';work'; conceptually, and how the house will actually be used by the client (which should be the resident). Contractors have a pool of experience and knowledge about constructibility that an architect can never approach, and if they honestly feel a modification can benefit a project, the architect should listen and evaluate it. Instead, architects overdesign something, and instead of suggesting an alternative that may in fact be better for everyone involved, they'd rather construct the detail poorly, cheaply, and to the letter of the detail so they can point the finger elsewhere after it works in an unintended manner, or looks low quality.

Lot sizes and garage locations are becoming something of a polarized issue with everyone. The front of the house tends to be the most open, and tradition (with good reason) places items of import at the front, and moving the more mundane / functional features to the back. Having a garage in the front of your house means you're turning the least attractive part of your house to your neighbors. You'll have a front yard that's a large percentage paved. Sure it's easy to maintain, but it looks like crap after it cracks or gets oil spots on it. Spectacular first impression to make on other residents and visitors. Garages in the rear do detract from the backyard, but honestly how many people use the entirety of their backyard? Dogs don't need an entire park behind your house, kids can't play ball in the average sized backyard anyways, and even if you prefer to grow a garden, it doesn't have to be farm sized. Having a garage in the rear means you have a side of the house dedicated to the pragmatics: where the power and gas enter the home, where your car is stored, where your garbage is taken out to. And even with this collection of mundane uses, alleys tend to be a more private area where someone you see is either your neighbor, a utility provider, or someone that shouldn't be there. It's a fairly well defined realm with is hard to say about anything residential anymore. Alleys should have two points of entrance, and if you meet another car, simply pull into another driveway and let him pass. I've never had to back up more than 30 feet when I lived at a house with an alley. As to entering the house from the back, I never found this to be an issue. Usually you enter from the garage into an area adjacent to the kitchen. What is the most common type of items you carry from your car to your house? Groceries. And guess where those typically go.

Hinting back at an earlier point, without a good reason columns and vaulted ceilings are something most architects will do their best to talk a client out of. Most columns you encounter in houses are either completely fake, entirely avoidable, or horribly oversized. They're there because someone somewhere reasoned that ';having columns is something an upper class house would have'; and simply put some in for no better reason. This is probably the case in your (likely ';formal';) dining room example. Vaulted ceilings are more expensive, seriously increase the mechanical (AC / Heating) loads in a building, restrict how utilities are run through the house, and are a serious hazard should your house ever catch on fire. Vaulted ceilings that are vaulted for no reason other than look are a waste (note, pitched ceilings that open to a loft or to a larger window are not). Attics are useful spaces, but tend to be overdone in recent construction. One small attic space for the heater, AC blower, and perhaps some storage is all the is required. Anything else added just to make the house look more like a grandiose castle is indeed wasted.

And not everyone in this country can live on a wooded 3.5 acre lot. I'm not sure we have enough land area now, and we wouldn't in the future. The infrastructure cost would be staggering, to run utilities the extra half mile between every single home. A sense of community is practically lost even with zero lot lines, spacing people out farther isn't going to encourage that development as a whole.

Short Answer: Architects are too few and have given up too much power to be to blame for every problem with housing in this country. Some may be trying to help, some are most certainly hurting the situation. And every person outside looking into the process is going to have a different point of view, mostly because everyone in the process has one. Designers... you'd have to narrow that down some (though some are where some of the problems may lie).
why don't you become an architect

House design word problem for math!!!?

you are designing a house with 3 feet wide windows on the back of the house. there are 4 feet between each end window and an edge of the house. the width of the house is 33 feet. how far apart should the windows be?( 3 windows)

    - write a verbal model for this problemHouse design word problem for math!!!?
model for back of the house

    4' 3' x 3' x 3' x 4'

or verbally, back of house (from L to R above) 4' from edge of house to window, window, x feet to next window, window, x feet to next window, window, 4 feet to edge of house. Note: windows are 3'

    so mathematically, you have 4+3+x+3+x+3+4 = 33

    or 2x + 17 = 33 or 2x = 16 or x = 16

so windows should be 16' apart

    hope you can understand this

Cat house design for declawed, outdoor cats.?

I have an outdoor declawed cat that wanted to be outside all the time. As I was recently critcized for allowing my cat outside. In my defence, I will share with all you other cat lovers the ';cat house'; design I built so a declawed cat can be outside safely.

I used an A-frame design because it required fewer cuts, but accually it turned out to have other benefits.

The base is 4' X 2'6';. Now attach two 4' X 8'; boards to the sides to make a U shape. When inverted, your cathouse will sit 8'; off the ground to protect it from the weather.

Next, I made 2 roof pieces, 3'6'; X 2' and connected them at a 90` angle. Place this on top of your base and line it up with the back of the base, allowing a 6'; ';porch';. But don't attach the roof yet.

Now, measure and cut the pieces to make the back wall and front enterence. The key here is to make the enterence just big enough to allow your cat to fit inside. A small enterence makes your cathouse a fortress! (continued)Cat house design for declawed, outdoor cats.?
yes it would appear to be safe.

i think that is your question, but your cat is going to want more room to explore.

for brief trips outside to should be safe, but do keep an eye on him/her please.

    House design/room placement!?

what is the best way to take advantage of natural breezes in teh house ? be specific

    why should you use overhangs?

what type of thermal mass should you use and why ?

can you put too many windows in your house? explain

explain how proper landscaping reduces energy costs ?House design/room placement!?
You can incorporate a passive solar heating and cooling house by taking advantage of natural sun and wind patterns.

Overhangs protect your house from overheating and also protect it from the elements.

    See http://www.building-your-green-home.com/鈥?/a>

Yes - if you have too many windows you can easily overheat a home in the summer, and intensify the cold in the winter. They are essentially ';breaks'; in the solid walls of the house.

Here's a page on energy efficient home design:

    http://www.building-your-green-home.com/鈥?/a>

    Hope this helps.House design/room placement!?
To take advantage of natural breezes you need to know which direction the wind blows in your area. Orient the most windows on the side where the breezes come from and directly across the house from them, as well as minimize barriers. You can also take advantage of convection with outlets near the roof or on it.

Overhangs especially on the south side shade the house and windows during the summer months when the sun is high, but allow the lower winter sun to shine into a room.

Thermal mass can be used in many ways, concrete floors are common, but also brick or stone interior walls will help regulate the temperature both heat and cool all year long. If you live in a cold climate having a solid wall exposed to sunlight can help heat the house. In a warm climate a solid wall that is shaded will help cool.

Yes, most windows don't hold heat very well. It would be near impossible to regulate the temperature in a glass house. Think of a green house, with the sun beating on it all day it would get very hot, remove the sunlight and it would cool dramatically. Kind of like a car.

Landscaping can help block sunlight to help cool a house or block sun to heat a house.
Sounds like what you are interested in is really a Passive House (not to be confused with passive solar). Please read my article on it and watch the video:

What Materials are energy efficient in house designs?

any help would be greatly appreciated, i want to know, say structures type, either wood or steel etc. What Materials are energy efficient in house designs?
It really depends on your location.

If you live in a cold climate then the best materials are those that are thick and heavy (thermal mass), to help store any heat from the sun, with thick external insulation to keep the cold air from cooling that thermal mass.

If you live in the wet tropics it's best to use very lightweight materials like timber and/or sheet metal with lots of ventilation but with very wide shaded roofs. Insulation still helps a lot here as well.

In hot dry climates the materials are again like cold climates (thick thermal mass with external insulation), but this time with lots of shading to keep the sun off the mass. This will make the thermal mass act as a cooling element instead, as long as you can keep the sun off it.

In all cases it's best to use local sustainable materials. Plantation timber for lightweight structures; local stone, mudbrick, or second hand thermal mass materials. The reason local is better is that transport of materials across the country (or world) take a LOT of energy.

Hope that helpsWhat Materials are energy efficient in house designs?
Metal roofs barely ever need to be replaced. Solar panels on the roof is a new great idea; sometimes you can generate almost all your own electricity. For heating your house, look into Geothermal power. It's awesome! Buy all Energy Star appliances as well.

When did housing design change to eliminate most interior doors, other than on baths and bedrooms?

Pretty much about the same time that Central A/C and heating system came into place. In the old days you only heated or cooled the rooms you needed with space heaters or window A/C units. The Central units needed to circulate the air in all the house...so doors that were closed caused problems. Most of this happened in the late 40's early 50's.When did housing design change to eliminate most interior doors, other than on baths and bedrooms?
Dunno, but on HGTV, it seems that everyone wants an ';open floorplan,'; where everything is basically in the same room- kitchen, dining room, living room.

One of the best place to get houses is MTS2. They have all sizes and you can check on the page which expansion the particular lot will need and if it uses custom content. You can still use a lot that requires objects from other ep, they just wont show up in your game or will show as default ea objects.

  • Can anyone recommend any good software package for playing round with ideas for new house designs?

Not necessarily for drawing accurate plans but just for sketching out ideas in 3d etc

CheersCan anyone recommend any good software package for playing round with ideas for new house designs?
Punch has a variety of packages, and all relatively cheap and easy to use. The do require you to draw the floor plan to generate a 3D image, but how detailed you want it is up to you.

I need an environmentally designed house. can somebody share japanese house designs?

in manila the weather is so hot during summer. is there any design to solve the heat ?I need an environmentally designed house. can somebody share japanese house designs?
The ideal house design in the phils should be something that maximizes the air flow within the interior of the room and minimizes the sun exposures. This means that there should be less partitions within the room and a lot of shading devices to eliminate exposures of the interior from the sun. However, in Manila, you cannot avoid the use of air-conditioning system due to island-heat reaction and less vegetation that really compliments to the heat of the day. Air is also nowadays polluted. But if the site of your proposed house is in a subdivision, air-conditioning system can be eliminated. Just have a high-ceiling interior and introduce indoor and outdoor garden in the plan. Your preference of having a japanese-inspired house is a very good decision. A japanese house concept is ideal in our climate. It has an open plan with partitions that can either be removed/folded. It has a wide eaves and high pitch roofing. The materials that are used in a japanese house is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functionally adaptable for a tropical climate.

You can actually create the footprint of your home plan and then move the walls around to see how it looks. It's free and easy. When you're doing that, you can also put in furniture to make sure everything will fit in the rooms you've designed.

Gool luck with your project !

Been looking at house designs. What is the big advantage to having a crawlspace verses nothing or a basement?

Now, with a concrete slab design, you have no room for pipes unless you already have the spaces inlaid. Of course, you could always saw or drill into the slab. A crawspace lets you add as you need to and is much more flexible with mistakes, although it may offer poor support for heavy things above it and last a shorter time than a conventional slab. An entire basement is the best of both worlds if you can afford it. Is there anything else I should really consider?Been looking at house designs. What is the big advantage to having a crawlspace verses nothing or a basement?
I've owned houses that have been configured all three ways and these are my thoughts. In CA, there are few basements due to cave in potential with earthquakes and liquefaction soils. Crawl spaces are a real pain if you need to have work done on your plumbing or electric because there is such small space to work in. Often crawl spaces do not have poured flooring (especially in older houses) which is problematic due to insects and moisture. Slabs are also problematic especially if plumbing was installed through the slab. They are also prone to cracking in earth movement, with invasive tree and bush roots and if not properly installed, with moisture. Basements are great but difficult to insulate and heat. They also often have moisture problems especially when concrete or slump block is used in the construction or when there is improper drainage along the walls.Been looking at house designs. What is the big advantage to having a crawlspace verses nothing or a basement?
in our cold climate ,i believe a full basement is the only way to go...
It really depends on the locale.

In the south where it is more humid, basements are almost unheard of.

In the absence of the locality affecting my decision I would opt for a basement. It provides storage space, if it's unfinished and can be converted into living space by finishing it.

Our washer/dryer are in the basement and I wouldn't have them anywhere else. There's a concrete floor with a drain and if there should happen to be an overflow it's very easy to clean up and there is no water damage to the rest of the house.
What kind of climate are you in? Having the house up off the ground is better to avoid bugs like termites, and helps avoid flood damage. But cold air can get in underneath. I bought a house recently that was built in 1927. It had a crawlspace, which was fortunate because we had to rewire it.
Basements require a dry foundation and need to be sealed on outside. They are expensive to build and to heat. Slabs are a no/no in northern states because the floor will get very cold and chill entire level. With a crawl space, the temperature of the home is moderated. It should be at least 4 feet high for access and lined with heavy polyethylene sheeting for 75-90% of surface to keep moisture levels down. The space can be ventilated although there are differing opinions on doing this seasonally.
Well first of all your facts are wrong, with the full slab if something were to happen and you cut or sawed into the slab you would take the risk of screwing up your entire slab and getting the whole thing fixed, not just the original problem. With the crawlspace, if you have a pipe burst you can get under the house without screwing up your foundation to fix the problems. Also as long as the builder supports the house correctly, you can put all the furniture ';upstairs'; as you would with a slab and not have to worry about a thing. Trust me, I had a house with a crawlspace and we had 2 waterbeds, and a 50 gallon fish tank all on one side of the house and it did nothing to the foundation, trust me, we also went under the house to make sure that it was not too much for the house and everything was fine. Next it also does not last a shorter time, it can last just as long as a full slab. Lets say that you go and drill through your slab and you put a huge crack in it without knowing and then your town floods your foundation will float away from where the crack was. As long as once again your builder puts the blocks where their supposed to be under the crawlspace the foundation will last just as long. Last, the basement issue is going to cost you about an additional $10, to 20K. Unless you are building your house on a hillside were you would have a daylight basement for the house on the side of the hill to be supported by. If you do decide to do the basement you need to remember that your permit costs are going to go up, as well as it may be harder to get the approval from the inspectors with a basement depending on the town or state that you live in. Last thing with a basement, if you have a certain type of dirt they may not allow you to put a basement on the house. I would check with the building dept in your town before you make any choices on your foundation. Just make sure that you look at all your choices maybe a little bit better before you make your final decision. Hope I was of some help.
